The Matthews and Black Hills State University, through the work of ArtCentral, hosts the first ArtCentral Film Festival of 2018. Four films, one per month, are offered from Jan. 21 through April 12, 2018. All films are free and open to the public. The first three films will be screened in The Matthews’ theater, while the final film will be shown at BHSU’s Jonas Hall, Room 305.
Following each film, the co-hosting organization will help facilitate a discussion about ideas presented in the film. Co-hosts for films are organizations in the Spearfish community. They will help people talk about how these issues relate to the community. The Mar. 20 film, “Make No Noise: The Story of a Skatepark” director Cecilia Cornejo visits Spearfish to lead the discussion.
Refreshments including popcorn, soft drinks, beer, and wine will be available for purchase during the three events at the opera house.

“If You Build It” follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to rural Bertie County, the poorest in North Carolina. They work with local high school students to help transform both their community and their lives. Living on credit and grant money and fighting a change-resistant school board, Pilloton and Miller lead their students through a year-long, full-scale design and build project that does much more than just teach basic construction skills. It shows ten teenagers the power of design-thinking to reinvent not just their town but their own sense of what's possible.
